State of Decay 3 was announced nearly six years ago, but the latest news confirms what many of us feared: the game basically didn't exist when that first trailer dropped. With an alpha playtest finally coming in May, we’re getting a look at the real reason development has taken this long, and it’s a frustrating look at how Xbox handles its marketing and studio communication.
In this breakdown, I’m digging into the recent interview with Philip Holt where he admitted State of Decay 3 was essentially a "Word document" and a pre-rendered concept by Blur Studio back in 2020. The most memorable moment of the 2020 trailer—the zombie deer—is officially not in the game. It was a "cool idea" that never made the cut into actual development.
