It’s a heartbreaking day for Bungie and Destiny fans. Following the final live-service content update for Destiny 2, Sony and PlayStation have executed a massive wave of layoffs at Bungie, reportedly gutting over half the studio. This includes the vast majority of the core Destiny team and some developers on Marathon. With studio head Justin Truman stepping down and future incubation projects effectively frozen, the reckoning has arrived, but it brings a profound sadness.
But this isn't just a post-mortem. I am offering something that you might not expect: Hope.
Bungie, Inc. is an American video game company based in Bellevue, Washington, and a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The company was established in May 1991 by Alex Seropian, who later brought in programmer Jason Jones after publishing Jones's game Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete.
Destiny 2 is a free-to-play online first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie. The sequel to 2014's Destiny and its subsequent expansions, it was originally released as a paid title in 2017
